The Liberty Double Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint in 1850. The Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin was designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre in 1849. Only proof specimens were issued by the US Mint in 1849, with the coins introduced into circulation in 1850. The Double Eagle was immediately popular and successfully used by merchants and banks in trade. The Liberty Double Eagle was struck from 1850 to 1907.
Obverse design elements on the 1877-S Liberty Gold Double Eagles feature a bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile effigy shows Liberty with her hair pulled up in a bun at the back of her head with a coronet crown on her head.
Reverse visuals on 1877-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coins include an image of the Great Seal of the United States. This design is an ornate version of the heraldic eagle, with a front-facing bald eagle behind the US national shield.
