The expansion of the existing US Eagle denominations, with its $10, $5, and $2.50 denominations, gave the US an ideal gold coin for use in commerce and international trade. The Double Eagle would be struck by the US Mint as the Liberty Head Eagle from 1850 to 1907 and as the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933 when the series concluded.
