The sugar maple leaf emerged as a symbol of Canada during the early 19th century, gaining prominence as a distinctly Canadian emblem. In 1834, the St. Jean Baptiste Society in Quebec adopted it as its emblem, while the maple leaf began appearing on Canadian military badges by the 1850s. This association strengthened throughout the 19th century, with the maple leaf being featured on Canadian coins and becoming increasingly recognized as a national symbol that distinguished Canada from the British Empire.

The obverse of 2011 Canadian Silver Maple Leafs comes with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, this right-profile relief depicts the Queen without a crown and is the fourth-generation bust of Her Majesty to grace Canadian coins. Ms. Blunt was just the second Canadian artist to create a monarch portrait for Canadian coins.

On the reverse of 2011 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf Coins is the sugar maple leaf. This version of the sugar maple leaf was created by Walter Ott in 1979. During confederation in 1867, Alexander Muir’s patriotic song “The Maple Leaf Forever” further cemented the sugar maple leaf’s cultural significance in Canada.
