American Gold Eagle coins debuted 5

3 years after the last gold coins were struck by the US Mint, the 1933 $20 Gold Double Eagle. The modern American Gold Eagle is a 22-karat specimen with 91.67% gold content, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.
In the obverse design of American Gold Eagle Coins, you will find Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907, it originally featured on the obverse of the $20 Gold Double Eagle through 1933.
For the reverse field of 1 oz Gold Eagles, the US Mint features one of two possible designs. From 1986 to mid-2021, the US mint featured Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of bald eagles in and around the nest. As of mid-2021, the coins now feature Jennie Norris’ image of the head of a bald eagle in left-profile relief.
