Coin Highlights
- Contains 1 oz of .9999 fine gold in BU condition;
- Holds a face value of 100 Euros backed by the Austrian government;
- 36th issue of the Philharmonic Series;
- The motif is the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra;
- Classic instruments that compose the orchestra are on the obverse and reverse sides.
The Design
Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfer created the series design using the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as a motif.
On the obverse, he showcases a reviewed version of the pipe organ located in the Musikverein, Vienna’s Golden Hall of Music. The original one, built in 1872, was destroyed during the war, along with part of the building which housed it. The reconstructed organ became a symbol of the nation’s resilience.
The inscriptions on the border refer to the coin’s origin, weight, metal content, purity, year of issuance, and face value in German, the nation’s official language.
The reverse features eight classical instruments that compose the Vienna Orchestra, including violins, a cello, the Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp. The series name arch over the instruments’ image.
The Gold Philharmonic Series
The Gold coin was the first Philharmonic introduced in the market. It was a one-ounce debuting coin in 1989, followed by fractional counterparts stamping the same classic design in the outcoming years.
Now the series comprise ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz, and in 2014, celebrating the series’ 25th anniversary, the Austrian eMint included a last fractional coin weighing 1/25 oz coin.
